One of the things I am grateful to social media for is introducing me to different ways to discover my own “style.” Don’t get me wrong, nothing is wrong with a baggy t-shirt and sweatpants, as I still wear these to this day. However, as I started to become more confident in my body, I thought it was time to hang up the sweatpants and try out some jeans and new tops. Now you are probably curious what I did to figure out what was the best fit for me. Let’s take a trip through my wardrobe and give you some tips on how I saved myself from going out of style.
1. Comfortability
One of the biggest things I looked for when picking out new clothes was figuring out what made me feel comfortable. Obviously, when I am lounging around with friends in my apartment, sweatpants are definitely the go-to. Now, if I am going to a gathering, either with family or friends, jeans are where it’s at. Recently, something that I have been obsessed with is this jean jumpsuit from Fashion Nova. It not only makes me feel comfortable in my own skin, but it also shows how confident I feel in my own body. This leads me to the next important thing in why you should figure out what clothes showcase your growth as a person!
2. Confidence
Here is the way I think about it: If your outfit makes you feel good, no matter if you get praised or hated for wearing it, no one else’s opinion should matter. To go back to the denim jumpsuit I love so dearly, I was walking to the grocery store, minding my own business with my earbuds in (I was listening to Who’s Lovin’ You by the Jackson 5 in case you were curious) when not one but TWO people complimented my outfit. I try not to mind people’s opinions much, but I always appreciate a compliment here and there. So, if you put something on and you love the way it looks on you, then that’s the one. Don’t hide yourself behind your clothing; let it be the thing that makes you shine.
3. Creativity
In terms of making your clothing showcase who you are, being creative with your style is one of my favorite things someone could do with their clothes! From the mix of the color palettes to the different textures and patterns on the fabrics that someone wears, their clothes give me a hint of who they are. You’ve chosen to wear cheetah-print styled clothes? I might ask if you like wearing cheetah print as a style or if you were inspired by The Cheetah Girls! Remember, this could lead us to assume things about others, so always make sure to ask, as this can be a great opportunity to get to know someone.
With the Triple C criteria list I have provided, these can be great tips to help you take a hard look at your wardrobe to figure out what can stay and which pieces can find a new home in the donation pile.
